Preview
Rice made their first bowl game since 2014 last season, but went just 5-8 on the year. They were able to make a bowl game despite being under .500 thanks to a lack of eligible teams. Their high academic scores gave the Owls the nod, though a loss in the LendingTree Bowl made Rice tied for the worst record ever by a team that made a bowl game. Even so, they may finally be moving in the right direction again in 2023.
Texas started out last season unranked, expected to be rebuilding after a stretch of several disappointing seasons. However, instead of struggling, the Longhorns excelled, rising to #20 in the rankings after a 5-2 start. The losses in that span were by one point to Alabama and in overtime at Texas Tech. Unfortunately, Texas cooled off from there, finishing 3-3 in the last 6 games. They’re expected to be good again in 2023.
Prediction
The Longhorns have only reached 10 wins one time over the past 13 seasons, but find themselves ranked in the top-25 quite often. They’re ranked pretty high again this season, and will try to prove that they are worth that ranking before heading to the SEC next season. They shouldn’t have much trouble with Rice in Week 1, though I’m a little hesitant to pick them to cover the spread. Ultimately, Texas should win easily.
NCAAF Picks:
