A pulsating opening clash between the Panthers and Hurricanes ensured that hockey fans had a late night on Thursday. Seven periods of NHL action was played out, with the game eventually finishing just before 2:00 AM ET. The decisive moment finally came with just 12.7 seconds remaining of the fourth overtime period, as Matthew Tkachuk found the net to give the Panthers a dramatic winner.

Credit must be given to both teams, as they battled intensively throughout the near six-hour clash. It would have seemed a long time ago by its conclusion, but the Hurricanes had taken the lead in the opening period. But, the Panthers struck back with two efforts in the second.

Carolina forced overtime with an effort in the final regulation period, but that would only begin the drama at PNC Arena. Aleksandar Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe scored the goals in regulation time for the Panthers, while Sergei Bobrovsky ended the night having made an incredible 63 saves from 65 shots.

There isn’t must time for the Hurricanes to regain their composure, as they will host game two in the series on Saturday evening. Seth Jarvis scored and recorded an assist in game one. Meanwhile, their other effort in game one was netted by Stefan Noesen.
