France’s march toward the gold medal at the Summer Olympics have continued throughout the knockout round, as they have appeared to improve with every showing under Thierry Henry. The national side eliminated Argentina in the quarterfinal stage, before overcoming an interesting challenge against Egypt in the previous round.
France were made to work incredibly hard to eliminate their African rivals after going behind with just under half an hour remaining. However, Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized the scores with seven minutes to play. The Crystal Palace striker would later add a second nine minutes into injury time, before the scoring was completed by Michael Olise.
Spain were at their very best in the first knockout round after easing past Japan with a 3-0 success in Lyon. Their standards remained incredibly high in the semi-finals after overcoming Morocco to land a 2-1 success against their African rivals. The winning goal in that clash was netted by Juan Sanchez with four minutes remaining on the clock.
