Preview

Atlanta has quickly risen to the top of the MLB’s ranks, pulling within 2.5 games of the overall top spot held by the Rays. They also became the 3rd team to reach a run differential of +100 or greater. The Braves are 15-2 in their last 17 games, surging from 33-24 to 48-26 on the season. Star OF Ronald Acuña Jr. has been a big part of their success. He ranks 2nd in the MLB in BA, hitting .324, and 4th in OPS at .952 on the year.

The Reds turned their season around with their current 11-game winning streak. They went from 4th place in the NL Central division, with a 29-35 record, to 5 games above .500, and 1st place in the division. Most metrics still project Cincinnati to finish below .500 and miss the playoffs, but if they can maintain even a small portion of their current success, they could prove doubters wrong. This next series is a great test.

Prediction

It’s hard to pick a loser between a team that has won 8 straight and gone 15-2 over their last 17, and a team that has won 11 games in a row. That being said, there is a notable advantage for the Braves in this game. Not only are they the better overall team, but they’ll have capable rookie AJ Smith-Shawver (2.03 ERA) on the mound against a struggling Luke Weaver (6.47 ERA). That should be enough to get the win.
