Preview
St. Louis got a key win against the Royals on Tuesday, splitting their brief 2-game series. The victory was another step in the right direction for a Cardinals team that has now gone 15-8 since May 6. They dug themselves into a hole by starting the season 10-24, but have done a solid job of not fully collapsing. In a weak NL Central division, St. Louis still has a legitimate chance to come out on top. This series is massive.
The Pirates picked up two road wins over the surging Giants this week, winning the series and returning to above .500 on the year. After a scorching hot 20-8 start, Pittsburgh had completely collapsed, going 6-19 in the 25 games that followed. Fortunately, they earned their first back-to-back wins in two weeks, and could use that momentum to get back on track. They sit just one game out of 1st place in the NL Central.
Prediction:
Pittsburgh is no longer the same sure-bet they were earlier in the season. In fact, they’ve become quite the opposite, flailing through the month of May. That being said, June offers a clean slate for them, as they head back home with some momentum. The Cardinals should be pretty competitive in this series, but I like the Pirates chances of winning this first game at home with Roansy Contreras (4.33 ERA) on the mound.
