Preview
Miami continues to climb the standings, rising into 2nd place in the NL East. They’ve claimed a Wild Card spot, thanks to an excellent month of June. The Marlins are now 21-9 over their last 30 games. On the other hand, they also played a very easy schedule recently. In June, they played just one opponent above .500, the Blue Jays, and lost 2 out of 3 games. Their next 6 games at Boston and Atlanta will be telling.
The Red Sox continue to be inconsistent this season. After a 6-game winning streak and sweep of the Yankees last week, they reverted to 1-4 over their last 5 games. This back and forth has been the story of Boston’s season, as they currently sit just one game above the .500 mark. As the last place team in the AL East, the Red Sox have a lot of work to do to climb back into contention. They need to enter the break hot.
Prediction
It’s hard to tell just how good the Marlins are right now. Their win rate over the last month has certainly been impressive, but a very weak schedule skews the results. This series against Boston will be a good test. In the first game, Miami will have Sandy Alcántara (5.08 ERA) on the mound. He has struggled quite a bit this year, but he should be a good match for Garrett Whitlock (4.50 ERA) of the Red Sox. I’ll take Miami.
