  • The Mets came up short in Houston, losing 10-8.
  • Philadelphia lost to the Braves, 5-1, on Thursday.
  • The Phillies are 541-516 in their all-time history against New York.

The Mets (34-40) and the Phillies (38-36) match up for an NL East bout. Both teams have fallen short of expectations this season, after playing at a much higher level last year. The loser here will be in trouble.

Preview

New York continues to stumble through this season, having now lost 13 of their last 17 games. It is becoming more and more unlikely that the Mets repeat their success from last season, but there is still a lot of time left for them to turn things around. They can start with this series against the rival Phillies, but will need their pitching to improve. They’ve allowed 28 runs in their last 5 games, going 1-4 in that span.

The Phillies failed to defeat the Braves in their last series, losing two games, with the 3rd postponed. Prior to their series against Atlanta, Philadelphia had gone 13-2 in their last 15 games, finally beginning to look like the team that made the World Series last season. They need to quickly get back on track to avoid falling below the .500 mark. The Phillies have scored just 24 runs in their last 7 games, despite going 5-2.

Prediction

Both the Mets and the Phillies have underperformed this season, falling short of expectations. Currently, they are headed in different directions, with New York flailing while Philadelphia begins to heat up. That being said, the recent success of the Phillies came in lieu of some awful offense. They’ll need to turn that around to win here, but I see it happening. The pitching matchup is pretty even, and the Mets are ice cold.
