Match Preview
The action in the Nations League for the 2024-25 edition kicks off this week, and two previous semi-finalists in the competition will collide in the opening round in League A. France famously won the competition in 2021, while Italy have twice finished third at the event, which includes in the previous edition of the competition in 2023.
France will be the clear favorites for success in this opening round of matches, as they look to build momentum after suffering elimination in the final four at the EUROs at the hands of Spain. Prior to that defeat, the French had gone eight matches without defeat. However, their performances at the EUROs were very underwhelming, as they scored just four goals in six matches.

Still, France’s showing was much better than Italy, despite the visitors this weekend going into EURO 2024 as the defending champions. It was a disappointing campaign for the Italians, and they were hugely fortunate to escape the group after winning just once from three matches. Their EURO dreams were ultimately ended in disappointment in the round of 16 after losing 2-0 against Switzerland.
France boasts an excellent recent record against Italy after recording victories in each of the last three. However, this will be the first clash between the sides since the French secured a 3-1 home success in June 2018. Italy’s most recent win against their rivals was secured at EURO 2008 by a 2-0 scoreline.
