Match Preview

There could be a shock in Group B at the Women’s World Cup, as Nigeria could eliminate either the hosts or the reigning Olympic champions. Nigeria caused a huge upset in their second group stage match, as they recorded a 3-2 win over Australia. That success lifted them to the top of the standings, and they will be able to book their place in the round of 16 with at least a draw against Ireland.

Asisat Oshoala made headlines in their recent win over the hosts, as the forward became the first Nigerian player to score in three editions of the World Cup. The win over the Aussies was also the first time that Nigeria has come from behind to win a match after losing each of their last 23 after allowing the first goal.

Ireland has already been eliminated from the Women’s World Cup, but their performances have deserved better than the results that they have picked up. The Irish fell to a second straight defeat in their most recent outing, as they lost 2-1 against Canada. However, there was a bright moment in that defeat for the Irish, as Katie McCabe scored their first ever goal at the competition.

However, Ireland made unwanted history in that defeat, as they became only the second time in World Cup history to open the scoring after five minutes before losing the match. But, there will be confidence within the Irish camp that they have the quality to end the group stage with maximum points to move off the bottom of the standings

Ireland vs Nigeria Prediction

Ireland’s performances have deserved better than their results have suggested. However, the preference remains for Nigeria in this final group stage match, as they bid to record a victory to reach the round of 16 at the expense of one of the major tournament contenders.
