Fight Preview

Canelo Alvarez will make his return to the ring at the end of September, as he defends his undisputed super middleweight titles against Jermell Charlo. The announcement of the fight caught fans off guard, as there was an expectancy that the Mexican pound-for-pound great would come up against the challenger’s twin brother, Jermall.

The 32-year-old has been the reigning super middleweight champion since 2021, as he landed a stoppage victory over Avni Yildirim in Miami. He followed up that success by adding the WBO title with a stoppage victory over Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021, and adding the IBF title with a victory over Caleb Plant. Canelo has successfully defended the titles twice over the last 12 months, scoring decision wins over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder.

Jermell Charlo will come into the fight as the outsider in the betting, but he looks like a very credible challenger. The American is the top-ranked light middleweight in the world, and is the reigning IBF, WBA, and WBO light middleweight champion. However, it will be fascinating to see whether the jump in two weight categories is something that he can contend with.

Charlo has been inactive for over 12 months, as he was last seen in May 2022, scoring a tenth-round stoppage against Brian Castano in California. That allowed him to bounce back from a controversial draw against the same rival. Charlo’s only career defeat was suffered against Tony Harrison in December 2018, but he responded to that setback with a late knockout win over his rival in 2019.

Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo Prediction

It’s hard to ignore the fact that Charlo is jumping up two weight classifications to take this bout, and it looks incredibly hard to see him scoring a victory over one of the most dominant fighters in the super middleweight division. Therefore, we fully expect Canelo to remain the undisputed champion.
