Boxing fans will need to wait until the final month of the calendar year for an event that has been over ten years in the making. In December, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury finally square off in the ring after years of insults thrown at each other on social media.
Despite talks between the camps being close for months, a sticking point has revolved around the location of the bout. According to reports, Joshua has been keen to stage the fight in the United Kingdom, while others involved wanted the bout to take place overseas. However, on December 11, all talk stops, as two generational greats in the heavyweight division do battle.
Both fighters will have questions to answer in the bout, and it is easy to argue that the long-awaited scrap is coming years after it should have happened. Fury has fought twice this year, beating journeymen such as Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach without being posed many questions. The Gypsy King’s only two career defeats remain the losses that he suffered in undisputed bouts against the great Oleksandr Usyk.
Joshua’s preparations for the fight have also been challenging, having been involved in a fatal car crash with friends in Nigeria last year. However, AJ made a winning return to the ring in July, albeit his win against Kristian Prenga wasn’t without its scares, as the former world champion was knocked down twice in the opening round before securing the second round stoppage.
Joshua has looked less comfortable against bigger stars in the division since losing back-to-back bouts against Usyk in 2021 and 2022, having also been devastatingly knocked out by Daniel Dubois in the fourth round in 2024. His recent wins have raised more questions than answers, and his dominant wins over Jake Paul and Francis Ngannou don’t prove much in the context of a showdown against one of the best heavyweights on the planet.
