Breeders’ Cup Classic Leading Contenders
Forever Young (Yoshito Yahagi)
The defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion will be back to defend his crown, as Japanese superstar Forever Young could become the first back-to-back champion in the lucrative race since Tiznow in 2001.
The five-year-old is an eleven-time winner in stakes company, finishing third in the 2024 Classic before going one better to beat Sierra Leone by just under a length at Del Mar 12 months ago. Only blotches on his form book since finishing a short head third in the Kentucky Derby in 2024 have come at Meydan, finishing third in the G1 Dubai World Cup in 2025 and runner-up earlier this year.
Oozed class on his return to U.S. dirt in September, breezing clear of Baeza, Phileas Fogg, and Stars and Stripes to win the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup by over three lengths.
Sovereignty (William Mott)
The showdown that the world has been waiting for will finally take place at Keeneland this year, as Sovereignty looks set to take his chance in the Classic.
He was ruled out of the race 12 months ago, and has shown glimpses of his best since returning to action this year after dominating the G1 Travers at Saratoga. The William Mott runner won the G1 Kentucky Derby in 2025, before following up at the Spa to land the G1 Belmont. Sovereignty is world-class at his best, but his poor showings can’t be ignored at the highest level, having finished a well-beaten second in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap (beaten 2 lengths by White Abarrio) and third in the G1 Stephen Foster (beaten five lengths by Magnitude).
Last year may have been his golden chance with a weight swing in his favor, but worthy of major respect for a barn that won the Classic with Drosselmeyer in 2011.
Magnitude (Steven Asmussen)
Steven Asmussen landed the Classic with Gun Runner back in 2017, and he holds leading claims once again in 2026 with Magnitude. The four-year-old is the only runner in the field that boasts a win over Forever Young, having got the better of the Japanese superstar in the G1 Dubai World Cup earlier this year.
However, Forever Young tends to underperform at Meydan, which ensures questions could be asked of that international form line. Magnitude’s form since that notable win has been mixed, landing the G1 Stephen Foster by a length from Baeza, before running well below form when only sixth and beaten 15 lengths by Sovereignty in the G1 Stephen Foster.
Excuses could be made, as his two worst runs have come at Saratoga (also beaten 21 lengths in the 2025 Belmont), and Keeneland could suit better.
Breeders’ Cup Classic Dark Horse to Consider
A high-class renewal of the Classic means that there is value at bigger prices. We liked the chances of Golden Tempo at +5000 to win the Kentucky Derby earlier this season, and while the Cherie DeVaux runner isn’t likely to go off at such a big price at Keeneland, he still merits huge respect.
He was bred to excel over further, having shown that with excellent wins in the Derby and Belmont, proving on those occasions that he can win off both a rapid or slow pace.
Likely needed his return run in the G1 Travers, when only beaten two lengths despite being off the track for over two months, and being given a poor ride by Jose Ortiz. Bred to excel in the Classic, with sire Curlin winning the race in 2007.
Breeders’ Cup Classic Picks
Sovereignty is a horse that I struggle to trust, as he has been fragile over the last 18 months since winning the Derby, being scratched from the Classic and Jockey Club Gold Cup due to setbacks. Forever Young is the superstar in this field, and the tune-up run will have him at 100% in his bid to go back-to-back.
He is the outstanding selection when making Breeders’ Cup Picks. I can see Golden Tempo using the weight swing to get competitive, making the DeVaux horse a standout in Exotics.
Magnitude should bounce back from his no-show at Saratoga to at least reverse the Travers Stakes form with Sovereignty. But, just as last year’s Classic was, this year’s renewal will be all about the most talented dirt horse that we have seen since Flightline- FOREVER YOUNG.
