Breeders’ Cup History
The idea of the Breeders’ Cup was formed in the 1980s, with the inaugural edition staged in 1984. Previously, the event was staged as a single-day meeting, before it was expanded to two days in 2007 in order to appeal to an international audience.

One of the most transformative ideas to the meeting came in the early 2010s, as ‘Win and You’re In’ races were added to the global racing calendar. These allowed victors of certain races in North America, England, Ireland, France, Japan, and Argentina to have a guaranteed spot in a specific race at the Breeders’ Cup.
Despite the event moving annually, Santa Anita holds the esteemed privilege of hosting the Breeders’ Cup on a record eleven occasions. The meeting has also been held outside of the U.S. on one occasion, with Woodbine in Canada playing host to the 1996 edition.

Few horses are as synonymous with the Breeders’ Cup as Tiznow, who is the only multiple-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, landing wins in 2000 and 2001.
However, horses such as Bayakoa (Distaff), Cody’s Wish (Dirt Mile), Elite Power (Sprint), and Monomoy Girl (Distaff) are also among 21 horses to have either regained or retained their crown. A further seven horses have won two different Breeders’ Cup races. Meanwhile, only Goldikova and Beholder are three-time Breeders’ Cup champions.
