Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026 Leading Contenders
Hughes (Bob Baffert)
Bob Baffert has used the American Pharoah Stakes as a springboard for his Juvenile contenders throughout recent history, and there is every chance that Hughes is open to further improvement.
The Into Mischief colt accelerated away from the American Pharoah field with ease in early October, eventually finishing six lengths clear of Net Par to maintain his perfect record under rules.
Sire has produced the winner of the Juvenile in the last two years, but Hughes will need to improve again at Keeneland, as the form of his Santa Anita Grade One isn’t likely to be especially strong.
American History (Todd Pletcher)
Todd Pletcher has been the dominant force in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in recent years, and he unleashed his leading chance for this year’s renewal in the G1 Breeders’ Futurity Stakes.
American History sat off a lethal pace before making his move in the home stretch, eventually picking off the talented Coach Pope to win by a length. There seems to be more substance to that form, with the runner-up being highly regarded by the Kenneth McPeek yard.
The fact that American History has winning form over course and distance shouldn’t be ignored, while it is the same prep landed by Pletcher winners of the Juvenile such as Ted Noffey and Forte.
Coach Pope (Kenneth McPeek)
Both runners from the G1 Breeders’ Futurity Stakes rank high among the leading contenders for this year’s Juvenile, and Coach Pope shouldn’t be ignored despite finishing behind American History.
Jose Ortiz got his ride all wrong at Keeneland in October, as the jockey seemed more preoccupied with beating market rival Q B Rocket for the lead than riding to get the win. After using up all of Coach Pope’s stamina to get into a position to challenge for the win, he couldn’t find anything when American History picked up the pieces from the red-hot pace.
A more patient ride could suit his chances of reversing the form at Keeneland in late October. Sire Tapit has an excellent reputation for two-year-old runners, producing BC Juvenile champions Hansen and Essential Quality.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Dark Horse to Consider
The market for the BC Juvenile won’t take full shape until the week of the race. But, a few notable horses should be considered. Sum Of Success is a well-bred horse for the Bobby Dibona stable, who is by Win Win Win and out of an In Summation mare.
The two-year-old has a perfect record under rules to this point, and looked incredibly well-suited to a seven-furlong distance when taking out the Listed Express Tour Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Speed figures of 86-112-104 indicate his ability, and there’s stamina on both sides of his pedigree that could make him an interesting outsider to note.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026 Picks
So often have bettors opted to ignore the Baffert apparent second string in the Juvenile, but Salahudin could be hard to overlook this year. The two-year-old is by Uncle Mo, who has produced plenty of high-quality thoroughbreds over further than a mile, including Juvenile winner Nyquist.
Salahudin boasts a perfect record under rules, and caught the eye when sticking on strongly to his task when taking out the G3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs, hitting a speed figure of 118. Notably, I get the sense even the mile wasn’t far enough to see the Baffert horse in his best light.
A bigger field, and a hotter pace to aim at will bring out further improvement, and he could be the leading chance from a value perspective. American History and Coach Pope are musts for Exotics, while Gaudreau should run another big race after finishing second behind the horse that would have been a hot favorite for this year’s Juvenile in the G1 Champagne.
