American Pharoah Stakes: Betting Preview
A key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is set for Santa Anita this Saturday, as the G1 American Pharoah Stakes headlines the card in California. This important race is also a notable stop on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, with previous winners of this weekend’s Grade One including American Pharoah and Nyquist both following up with a win in the opening leg of the Triple Crown.
Bob Baffert typically sends his best juveniles to this weekend’s race, meaning it isn’t surprising that four of the six entries are from his stable. Hughes is the most exciting of his runners, with Juan Hernandez booked aboard.
The two-year-old by Into Mischief is unbeaten in three starts under rules, landing the G3 Best Pal and G1 Del Mar Futurity on his previous two starts. The step up in distance is a question, but he looks incredibly progressive based on recent Equibase speed figure of 101 and 96.
Imperial Honor, ridden by Joel Rosario, is expected to be his stablemate’s main challenger. The two-year-old by Honor A.P. was a striking winner on debut at Del Mar in September, posting a speed figure of 94. Presents a real threat to his more fancied stablemate.
Domus, also trained by Baffert, was well-beaten by Hughes in the G1 Del Mar Futurity, and is easy to overlook. Emancipate rounds off the Baffert contenders this weekend. He bounced back to form after a loss in August with a professional win at Del Mar at the end of the same month. Not as simple as others in this field.
Away from the Baffert runners, Dang Son is trained by Doug O’Neill. However, it is unlikely that the son of Good Magic will reverse the form with Hughes after finishing third in the G1 Del Mar Futurity. Net Par is the most exposed runner in this field for trainer Antonio Garcia, finishing second in the I’m Smokin Stakes after landing the Graduation Stakes.

This race is all about Hughes, who will be expected to win to enhance his claims for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at the end of the month. Imperial Honor looks like the most likely angle for Exactas, with the Baffert horse expected to improve now up in grade.
