Best Bets For Longchamp Horse Racing
Naana’s Shadow (Group One Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp)
Arc day features six Group One thoroughbred races, including the Group One Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, which is run over a sprint distance of five furlongs. Naana’s Shadow has looked a very progressive sprinter for the Katie Scott team throughout the season, and the daughter of Havana Grey will get all the weight allowances on Sunday as a three-year-old filly.
She was a winner over course and distance last month, smoothly easing a length clear in the Group Three Prix du Petit Couvert. She was unlucky in a handicap at York before that start, but has recorded all five of her victories under rules this season over the five furlongs on the turf.
The selection is bred to stay further, with Havana Grey offspring such as Vandeek and Orthodox winning over six and seven furlongs at the highest level. That bodes well for a stamina-sapping track such as Longchamp, and her battling quality was a key reason for her success over course and distance last month.
Cankoura (Group One Prix de l’Opera)
I’m a massive fan of Cankoura, and she would be my idea of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner at this stage. Francis Graffard is in red-hot form at present, and the four-year-old lost little in defeat last time when looking below her usual quality and being short of room when five lengths behind Aventura in the Group One Prix Jean et Louis Romanet at Deauville.
That track didn’t appear to suit, and a return to Longchamp should be more straightforward. She has already won over the Opera distance this season, pulling a length clear of Alla Stella in the Listed Prix de la Pepiniere at Chantilly. Has only made one previous career start at Longchamp, winning the Prix Finlande last May.
Connections are working back from the Breeders’ Cup following her runner-up effort in the G1 New York, and she will be hard to beat at a double-digit price if back on song at a track where she has previously won.
