Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf 2026 Leading Contenders

Haffner (Aidan O’Brien)

Aidan O’Brien will hold the 2026 favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, as the Irish maestro chases a fifth straight win in the race. Haffner, a son of American Triple Crown winner Justify, has won three from six career starts, including a notable win when streaking a length clear of Burning Up in the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes on his first attempt over a mile.

Was previously seventh in the G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, but excuses were available that day, as he didn’t look suited by the sharp distance. Looks to be a leading Guineas hopeful for the dominant European stable in 2027.

Al Hudaiba (Charlie Appleby)

Charlie Appleby will once again hold a very strong hand in the turf races at the Breeders’ Cup this year, and Al Hudaiba could be considered to be one of his better chances. The two-year-old won the G2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July, before being touched off by Dr Rascal in the G2 Vintage Stakes, finishing a short head behind Haffner.

Has since stepped up to a mile with a dominant win in the G1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. The Canadian track has launched plenty of Godolphin runners on their path to Breeders’ Cup glory, including Notable Speech in 2025.

Agate (Kelsey Danner)

The leading North American hopeful in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf is likely to come in the form of Kelsey Danner-trained Agate. The two-year-old by Karakontie is experienced over a mile, producing a career-best effort to land the G2 Bourbon Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland in early October.

The drop back in distance may be a slight concern, as the Danner horse was well-beaten by How’s Al Today in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile. But, experience at Keeneland is a major plus, and further improvement could see him get competitive with the European raiders.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Dark Horse to Consider

Of those at bigger prices, Michael O’Callaghan-trained Celeron could be a very interesting outsider. The two-year-old is by Mohaather, who was a high-class miler in Europe, winning the G2 Summer Mile and G1 Sussex Stakes.  That suggests that Celeron will eventually get a mile.

He was excellent in the G2 Railway Stakes when beating Tribeca by three lengths at the Curragh, before he was lame when finishing seventh in the red-hot G1 Phoenix Stakes, won by the best juvenile in training, Sun Goddess. He was highly regarded to run well that day as a well-backed second favorite, and it looks far too early to dismiss his chances at the highest level.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf 2026 Picks

Europe’s domination of the Juvenile Turf will continue in 2026, but the likely winner may come from France instead of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Christopher Head has regularly called Avec Toi the best juvenile that he has trained, and there were excuses for his recent no-show in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere when given far too much to do after being drawn wide and chasing from three wide.

Prior to that, he had shown plenty of stamina to win the G3 Prix la Rochette on quick ground at Longchamp, taking his tally to three stakes wins on varying grounds over seven furlongs. He should get a mile, and he is the main pick. Al Hudaiba and Celeron could be the interesting selections to round out the Trifecta.
