Event Preview

The penultimate race on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule for 2026 is set for this Sunday, as the prestigious Xfinity 500 will be staged in Virginia. First held in 1949, the race has seen the field complete 500 laps to cover the 263-mile distance. Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Jimmie Johnson are tied for the most race wins, while Hendrick Motorsports has historically been the dominant team.

Kyle Larson’s confidence will be sky-high coming into the penultimate round after winning a third Cup Series Chase race last time out at the YellaWood 500. Larson’s advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship now stands at 73 points, and it is notable that the dominant driver has only finished outside of the top ten in one of the last eight rounds.

Last weekend could have been pivotal in the championship battle, with only Denny Hamlin finishing inside the top ten among the drivers currently in the top nine. Hamlin’s consistency throughout the playoffs should be respected, finishing in the top ten in five of the last seven rounds. However, Hamlin hasn’t recorded a race win since the Great American Getaway.

Miserable weekends for Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, and Joey Logano last Sunday mean that they will all have mountains to climb in the penultimate race weekend of the season. William Byron was one of the standout performers last weekend, claiming P2. Byron has now finished in the top ten in five of the last seven races.

Xfinity 500 Picks

This track is one that Ryan Blaney has an excellent record at, and he could prove to be the value play when making Xfinity 500 picks. Blaney is a three-time winner this season, and has finished in the top five in four of the last five rounds. His record at Martinsville is excellent, winning two of the previous three editions of the Xfinity 500. Therefore, he could be a worthwhile angle to consider on Sunday.
