Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2026 Leading Contenders
Ways And Means (Chad Brown)
The betting for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint will be headlined by Ways And Means, who will be bidding to give Chad Brown a record-extending fourth victory in the race. The five-year-old has obvious claims, having shown an electric turn of foot to see off the re-opposing Kilwin in the G1 Ballerina Stakes last time.
She has racked up back-to-back graded wins since returning to action following a long layoff, with a second behind R Disaster in the G1 Derby City Distaff earlier this year. Her latest effort scored an Equibase rating of 106, and she has consistently hit figures between 100-110 since landing the G1 Test Stakes in March 2024. Obvious chance.
Explora (Bob Baffert)
Three-year-old fillies don’t have the greatest record in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, but Explora should be respected for last year’s winning trainer Bob Baffert. The three-year-old by Blame blotted her form book slightly when beaten a head by Conceit in the G3 Dogwood Stakes last time, but it is notable that she was required to concede weight.
She has largely been progressive aside from that, including wins in the G1 Test and Leslie’s Lady Stakes since dropping back to seven furlongs after running fourth (beaten only two lengths) in the Kentucky Oaks. Has proven stamina on her side in this company, and the three-year-old is still likely to be improving.
Sweet Azteca (Richard Baltras)
Richard Baltras will saddle Sweet Azteca in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint this year. This six-year-old boasts plenty of speed, and was excellent when landing the G3 Rancho Bernardo Stakes at Del Mar in mid-August. Her form appears to have reached new heights since joining her current yard by Michael McCarthy, winning two Grade 2s and two Grade 3s.
Her Equibase ratings would certainly make her a leading contender, with a season-high 110 being scored when winning the G2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos in July. Fascinating contender, who hasn’t been seen in Grade One company since landing the G1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita in 2024.
Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Dark Horse to Consider
With a red-hot pace likely to be set by Evanescence and Kerry’s Kiss, there is a chance of a pace collapse. That could suit a deep closer in the closing stages, which could bring Praying into contention.
The Robert Medina runner is also entered in Saturday’s Sprint, but this looks like a more sensible option. She is by Vekoma, and picked up plenty of pieces late in the day in the G2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, finishing within a neck of Evanescence. Whether she stays the seven furlongs remains up for debate, finishing last in the G2 Bed O’Roses Stakes and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
However, she certainly handles Keeneland better than most other tracks, having finished second in the Myrtlewood Stakes and winning last year’s Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, along with her runner-up finish in the same race this year. She will likely go under the radar, but the nature of the pace map could see her hold interesting claims at a big price.
Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2026 Picks
Ways And Means is certainly the one to beat in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint this year, but she could be vulnerable if sitting too close to a red-hot pace. That could play directly into the hands of Majestic Oops for trainer Philip D’Amato.
The six-year-old is excellent around one-turn, and will sit back to avoid getting dragged into the pace battle. Her stamina could be a great tool over seven furlongs, having previously run with credit when second in the G2 Zenyatta and fourth, but beaten a length, in the G1 Clement L. Hirsch.
This drop back to seven furlongs, especially at Keeneland, should suit, having already shown her speed when landing the American Beauty Stakes over six furlongs earlier this season. Her latest Equibase speed figure of 98 leaves her with plenty to find, but if replicating her effort from Del Mar at the start of August, which recorded a 107, she is well worth taking a chance on at a massive price.
