Breeders’ Cup Mile 2026 Leading Contenders

Notable Speech (Charlie Appleby)

The reigning champion will be back to defend his crown at Keeneland. Notable Speech was a dominant winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile 12 months ago at Del Mar, finishing just under two lengths clear of Formidable Man.

His campaign has arguably been stronger this time around, winning the G1 City of York Stakes over seven furlongs, before landing the G1 Woodbine Mile for the second year in succession. That latest effort highlights his clear claims, as the re-opposing Deterministic had no answers for Notable Speech’s change of gears.

However, it could be notable that the four-year-old was well-beaten on his only career start at Keeneland, finishing only fourth in the G1 Maker’s Mark Mile earlier this year.

Blue Bolt (Andrew Balding)

The competitiveness of the Breeders’ Cup Mile will likely hinge on the involvement of Blue Bolt, who is also entered in the Filly & Mare Turf. The Andrew Balding runner would be significantly more interesting in this race, as she has excelled over a mile throughout her four-year-old campaign.

It could be argued that she has been the best European over the distance this season, racking up five straight graded stakes wins. She has twice got the better of G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner, giving away plenty of weight on both occasions. Blue Bolt beat the same rival, as well as the talented City Of Memphis, in the G1 Matron, which was by far her best career-effort to date.

Rounded off the European campaign with a facile win of the G1 Sun Chariot. Excelled over a mile, and would be a huge player if taking on the boys.

True Love (Aidan O’Brien)

Aidan O’Brien has a number of potential runners, but most interesting of those could be True Love. The three-year-old filly was a well-backed favorite in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, but was soundly beaten at Del Mar.

She showed plenty of ability over a mile earlier this season, winning the G3 Priory Belle and G1 1,000 Guineas. Has been somewhat of an enigma since then, finishing third in the G1 Coronation Stakes and second in the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Was beaten out of sight by Blue Bolt in the G1 Matron, but that was unlikely to be her true running. She was back on song last time when beating Nighttime by a head in the G1 Prix de la Foret.

Breeders’ Cup Mile Dark Horse to Consider

It is notable that eight of the last 20 winners of the Mile have arrived via Keeneland, with six running in the Turf Mile Stakes. Rhetorical was an excellent winner of that race this year, making all to take the race away from his rivals.

The five-year-old was third at Keeneland in the G1 Maker’s Mark Mile earlier this season, but has looked more accustomed to sitting on the pace. Notably, of the eight winners that have won the Mile after running in the Turf Mile Stakes, seven have failed to win.

Therefore, Lake Forest could be a dangerous contender for the William Haggas yard if making a faster start. Brilliant Berti also ran the Turf Mile Stakes (finishing fourth, but beaten only two lengths). The +5000 outsider shouldn’t be overlooked for a Cherie DeVaux yard that sprung an upset in the Mile two years ago.

Breeders’ Cup Mile 2026 Picks

Blue Bolt would be incredibly interesting if she takes on the boys in the Mile. However, Notable Speech is such a straightforward type, and with Rhetorical and Qirat likely to set a hot pace, it could set up perfectly for the Godolphin runner to use his world-class turn of foot to put the race to bed immediately.

Lake Forest should run a big race and is one to consider for Exotics, while Deterministic should also run his race, but he may once again find Notable Speech too good.
