Breeders’ Cup Distaff 2026 Leading Contenders

Nitrogen (Mark Casse)

One of the best bets for the weekend for many will run in the Distaff, as Nitrogen bids to give Mark Casse a first win in the race, and a first Breeders’ Cup victory outright since 2018. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro certainly sets the standard, winning nine of her 17 career starts in stakes company.

She is proven over the distance, having won the G1 Ogden Phipps and G2 Beldame Stakes this season. In the former, she beat the field into submission, winning by a 13-length margin at Saratoga. Held her own against the boys over the summer, finishing within five lengths of Sovereignty when runner-up in the G1 Whitney.

Could still have questions to answer though, as she was shockingly beaten in both the G2 Azeri and G1 Apple Blossom this season. Meanwhile, she was only runner-up over course and distance in last year’s G1 Spinster. Didn’t have the gears to tackle Scylla in the Distaff last year, but she looks a better horse this year and this year’s renewal doesn’t boast the same depth.

Fully Subscribed (Chad Brown)

If there is one horse in this field that still looks to be improving, then it could be Chad Brown-trained Fully Subscribed. The four-year-old has been in excellent form throughout the summer since finishing second behind Nitrogen in the G1 Ogden Phipps.

Following that run, she has landed the G2 Shuvee Stakes, before easily beating the same rival (Scottie Lassie) by nearly ten lengths in the G1 Personal Ensign. However, her career-best performance came in the G1 Spinster over course and distance, beating the incredibly talented three-year-old Counting Stars by three lengths.

She appears to be peaking at the right time, and this Tiz The Law filly shouldn’t be overlooked in her bid to reverse the Ogden Phipps form with Nitrogen.

Splendora (Bob Baffert)

Is it ever wise to rule out a Bob Baffert runner at the Breeders’ Cup? Splendora represents the successful trainer at the meeting in the Distaff, and her form reads well on paper. The Audible mare has won five from six starts in 2026, which includes wins in the G2 Molly Pitcher and G2 Locust Grove Stakes on her last two appearances.

Equibase ratings of 104 and 101, respectively, from those appearances still leave her with plenty to find, with Nitrogen’s latest win in the G2 Beldame scoring a 114. But, the notable aspect with Splendora is that she has come alive since being stepped up in distance, with no rival getting to within five lengths of her on her last two appearances.

She also holds a notable form edge over the re-opposing Immersive, beating the Brad Cox horse by two lengths in the G2 Shawnee Stakes earlier this season.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Dark Horse to Consider

The top of the betting market for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff looks strong, but there could prove to be value at a bigger price. Super Corredora was a shock winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and a slow start to 2026 has seen her overlooked at the highest level, finishing fourth-place in the Las Virgenes and sixth-place in the G3 Santa Ysabel.

However, she stormed back to form in sensational style in the recent G2 Zenyatta Stakes, scoring a career-best Equibase rating of 102 in the process. She is a daughter of Gun Runner, who has produced countless stars, including those that typically improve over time, including 2024 Classic champion Sierra Leone.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff 2026 Picks

While I wouldn’t be surprised to see Super Corredora run a big race, the top two in the betting look too strong in this year’s Distaff. I’m prepared to take a chance on the improving Fully Subscribed, who ticks the notable trend of coming through the Spinster, just like four of the last seven Distaff winners.

She likely didn’t have things all her own way in her first clash against Nitrogen, but she has looked uncomplicated since, and the manner of her win over Counting Stars last time suggests that there is plenty more to come.
