Superliga is the first national championship established outside the United Kingdom.  It dates all the way back to 1891 and has a very colorful history, which could easily be a topic for a separate article. Twenty-seven teams managed to win the title, and among them, two are dominant – River Plata with 36 trophies and Boca Juniors with 33. Racing has 18, Independiente 16, San Lorenzo 15.

Independiente is the most successful club in South America when looking at the number of the international trophies, with 18, same as Boca, but with one more Copa Libertadores, 7.

Format of the Superliga

The Argentinian top tier suffered numerous changes in its format over throughout its existence, but the latest one established in 2014 goes like this.

There are 24 clubs in the league, and unlike other championships, there is just one game with one another, which is a single round-robin system.

The champion is the one with the most points at the end of the season, The tie-breakers if there is a need for them

  1. Goal-difference
  2. Goals scored
  3. Head to head matches

Now, we have an interesting and quite unusual situation regarding the relegation rules. For determining the four teams that are going to the lower tier, the averaging system is used. Teams with the lowest average of points in the three-year cycle are going down, while the winner and the runner-up earn a promotion.

This will only last for one more year, and after that, two teams are going to be relegated to the second tier.

Five teams are going to Copa Libertadores, top four from the standings, and the winner of Copa de la Superliga, while the next six go to Copa Sudamericana.

Betting on Argentinian Superliga

There are three types of betting here, the usual single-match bets, in-play betting, and outrights.

The most common single-match bets are :

  1. Full-time result
  2. Total goals Over/Under

In-play betting has all the standard features as standard single-match wagering.

However, outrights are more than fun. Due to a big competition, the most popular outright bet refers to the winner of the championship. Year, to year we see fantastic battles all over this beautiful country, and although Boca won three of the previous five trophies, the Argentinian Superliga is one of the most exciting competitions in the world.

The top goalscorer is a very prestigious award in Argentina and is much more valued than in Europe. Therefore, people love to pick their favorite and stake some money on it.

Betting Tips

In Argentina, soccer has a much higher status than anywhere else in the world. Did you know, for example, that there’s a religion in Argentina that’s dedicated to worshipping the legendary Diego Maradona? The Iglesia Maradoniana, as it is officially called, has over 150,000 registered followers.

And that’s not even the craziest thing about soccer in Argentina. Dubbed the “biggest derby in the world”, the between Boca Juniors and River Plate is often violent, both on and off the pitch. Just take their 2018 meeting in the Copa Libertadores final as an example. The second leg had to be moved all the way to Madrid due to crowd violence.

Although they don’t tend to fist-fight each other, players on the pitch are usually equally passionate. And that’s something that guarantees a spectacle each time. So, what does this all mean for bettors? It means that anything can happen in Superclasico!

The rivalry in Argentina has a totally different meaning than in Europe or anywhere else in the world. For example, take Boca and River. That might be the biggest matchup you know, but be sure that there are dozens of similar rivalries in this competition. You need to study which teams are disliking one another, and examine the histories before placing a bet.

Also, do know that efficiency in Argentina is very low. The style of football is slow, a bit defensive-minded, and Under 2.5 goals, along with HT Draw are two of the most common winning tips.
