The countdown is on until one of the biggest cinematic releases of 2026. Avengers: Doomsday serves as the sequel to Avengers: Endgame, which was released in 2019, and is set 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts. It is the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Excitement levels ahead of the release in December reached new heights after it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr would return to the MCU to play Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday Early Predictions
The return of Downey Jr to the MCU has raised excitement levels ahead of the upcoming release in December, but for many, the movie will need to reach unlikely heights to eclipse Endgame in 2019.
Downey Jr will play the role of Doctor Doom, who presents an existential threat across separate universes. His threat will ensure that groups of heroes from three different universes will need to join forces, with the Avengers, Wakandans and New Avengers, along with the Fantastic Four and original X-Men all working in unison.
As expected, a star-studded cast has been assembled, with Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Rudd being among the A-Listers that will star in the film.
A sign of the excitement levels was apparent when over one billion people watched the teasers after their release on social media. Therefore, a record-breaking run at the theatres is expected. But, its success could be negatively impacted due to being released on the same day as Dune: Part Three.
Despite this, stats show that a record-breaking weekend is expected, meaning that taking over 250 million at the box office is a standout selection at the odds available.
It is more challenging to predict characters that could meet their untimely end at the hands of Doctor Doom. But, with a sequel titled Secret Wars already slated for release in 2027, a few characters may not make it to the final chapter in Phase Six of the MCU. As an interesting selection, Sam Wilson’s Captain America stint could be short-lived, as he may sacrifice himself to save the world.
Avengers: Doomsday is released on December 18, 2026.
