Event Preview
Illinois hosts action on the PGA Tour this weekend, as a distance of 7,257 yards will be covered in the John Deere Classic. A purse of $8.8 million will be up for grabs at the stroke play event, with the tournament record held by 2024 champion Davis Thompson, who finished 28-under when landing the event.
Ben Griffin looks like the obvious starting point this weekend. The American has been in excellent form throughout 2026, including two third-placed finishes. His record at TPC Deere is also excellent, claiming T5 on his debut appearance in 2024.
Davis Thompson and J.T. Poston are among the former champions involved this weekend, and both should be respected. The latter appears to have played his way back into form based on his excellent T4 at the recent U.S. Open. Expected to go well this weekend at a course that he likes.
Keith Mitchell’s consistency should also be respected. Mitchell has achieved three top 10s, and has also finished in the top five on one occasion in his last two appearances. Denny McCarthy has also thrived since breaking his duck at signature events with a top 25 finish at the Travelers Championship. Since then, he has finished T6 on three of his last four starts.
John Deere Classic Picks
South Korean player Tom Kim could be an interesting angle this weekend. Kim finished a solo third at the U.S. Open last month, and has gradually regained his consistency as the season has progressed, including top 15 finishes in three of his last five starts.
