Event Preview
Action on the PGA Tour will take place in California this weekend, as some of the world’s best will be in action at The American Express. La Quinta Country Club will play host to the event, which will cover a total distance of 7,060 yards. The 72-par event has been played annually since its introduction to the calendar in 1960.
A total of 72 holes have been played at the event since 2012. Scottie Scheffler heads the betting for the event this weekend, as he returns to action for the first time since finishing in a tie for fifth at The Sentry. The American remains in high-quality form, and it would be little surprise to see him make a charge for victory, just as he did when landing the Hero World Challenge at the end of 2023.
Patrick Cantlay recovered well to finish in a tie for 12th a few weeks back to finish 23-under at The Sentry. He has a fine recent record at the event, having finished as the runner-up in the event by one shot in 2021. A recent winner of the event that could present value in the betting is Si Woo Kim, as the South Korean landed success in California in 2021.
The American Express Prediction
There is no shortage of leading contenders for victory this weekend. However, we are prepared to take a chance on Tony Finau. The American plays this course well, and he should come on from his return to action when finishing 17-under at The Sentry at the start of January.
