Race Preview
The Breeders’ Cup Turf is the feature race of the two-day meet to be staged on the grass at Del Mar. This race covers a total distance of 1 ½ miles, traditionally considered to be the European Classic distance. Horses aged three will be involved, as they aim to win their share of the $5 million purse.
Aidan O’Brien has won the race on a record seven occasions, with his latest success coming with Auguste Rodin in 2023. Luxembourg represents the Irish maestro this year.
The five-year-old started the season in excellent form with a win in the G1 Coronation Cup, but has come up short on his last two efforts, including when sixth in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes over a mile and two.

It could be argued that O’Brien’s best chance comes in the form of progressive filly Wingspan. She was last seen chasing home Kalpana in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, and she appears to be crying out for this step up in trip.
Rebel’s Romance won this race in 2022 for Charlie Appleby, before winning international prizes in the forms of the G1 Charter Cup and G1 Von Europa in 2024. Clearly merits plenty of respect for connections that have an excellent record in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Emily Upjohn will be reunited with Frankie Dettori in the Turf, but she has been below her best throughout 2024, with her best effort coming when taking third in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Far Bridge looks to be the best American hope, but the four-year-old will need to improve on his win in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic run.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Picks
Wingspan will be a solid play this weekend, as she gets weight from all rivals and appears to be heading in the right direction.
Jayarebe is another runner that we like. The three-year-old has been progressive throughout the season, with his only defeat coming in Group One company at the hands of Economics. Bounced back in fine style to win the competitive G2 Prix Dollar last time out.
Free Pick:
- Wingspan
- Jayarebe
