Race Preview

The final Grade One on the card for Del Mar on Friday comes in the form of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. A total distance of one mile will be covered on the turf, with a highly talented field of horses aged two likely to go to post in California.

Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand as he chases a third straight win in the race. Henri Matisse has already held his own in Grade One company this season, beating subsequent top-level winner Hotazhell over seven furlongs in late August.

A return to better ground will suit his chances after coming unstuck in a French Group One on soft underfoot conditions in early October.

New Century heads the betting for the Andrew Balding team. The two-year-old already has a North American success to his name after beating the re-appearing rival Al Qudra over a mile in the G1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. Clearly progressing, and there could be more to come.

Al Qudra had previously beaten New Century on two occasions, including at Ascot on good ground over seven furlongs. It is hard to overlook his chances of reversing the Woodbine form this weekend.

Aomori City is another runner for the Charlie Appleby team. The two-year-old steps up to a mile for the first time after finishing fourth over seven furlongs in the G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh in mid-September.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Picks

A chance could be taken on Seagulls Eleven for the Hugo Palmer team on Friday. The two-year-old finished extremely well when finishing second behind Ancient Truth in the G2 Superlative Stakes, and was also a creditable third behind Scorthy Champ in the G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes.

A return to better ground will see a better run than his fourth in the G1 Dewhurst in October.
