Christophe Clement Turf Stakes: Betting Preview

The Saratoga card on August 15 is headlined by the G1 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes, which provides the winner with a starting spot in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf later this year. A competitive field of seven will go to post, with the betting expected to be headed by Program Trading for Chad Brown.

The six-year-old should be respected as a multiple-time stakes winner, and he looked at the top of his game when landing the G2 United Nations by two lengths at Monmouth Park in July. That was a second straight win at the track, and a return to Saratoga should suit after finishing a neck second in the Bernard Bauch last August.

However, talented three-year-old raider Ancient Egypt gets weight from his elders this Saturday, which could prove crucial. The Charlie Johnston runner was last seen finishing a head second behind the talented Maltese Cross in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris, and he was also runner-up in the G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Looks well suited to this challenge, and further improvement is expected.

Fort George is another of the European raiders, who has been a regular performer on U.S. turf this season. He was last seen finishing a nose behind Ole Crazy Bone in the G2 Bowling Green in July. Should be capable of reversing that form, but he looks a level below some of the other contenders.

Minaret Station is still looking for his first win of the season for William Walden, while Tawny Port drops down in distance after winning the G2 Belmont Gold Cup over two miles.

Christophe Clement Turf Stakes Picks

I’m a big fan of Survie, and she looks more than capable of playing a leading role against the boys this weekend. The five-year-old was excellent on her U.S. debut at Saratoga at the start of the month, streaking clear by a couple of lengths to land the G2 Glens Falls.

She is bred to excel over this distance, meaning that there is no surprise that she improved at the Spa after being campaigned over shorter trips for much of the season. Was high class in Group company over this distance in France last season, and she has looked more suited to fast ground this term since joining George Boughey.
