Event Preview

The Epsom Oaks is the feature race at Epsom Downs on Friday, as the second-oldest of the British Classics will feature a field of talented three-year-old fillies. It forms the middle leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, as it is staged after the 1000 Guineas and before the St Leger.

Aidan O’Brien holds an excellent record in this race, having won the Oaks on ten occasions, including victories in each of the previous three. His main challenger this year comes in the form of Savethelastdance. This three-year-old produced the best performance of the season of any filly this year, landing the Cheshire Oaks Stakes by a widening 22-length margin. That victory scored an official rating of 109, while she has also beat Boogie Woogie by two lengths to further her claims in this field. She has the potential to be a superstar.

Savethelastdance is certainly the strongest contender after hitting a number of trends, including reaching an RPR of at least 95 on her previous start. Soul Sister also achieved that feat, as she took a considerable step in the right direction in the G3 Musidora. That victory over Novakai by four lengths was unexpected, especially after finishing 12th in the G3 Fred Darling at the end of April. However, Frankie Dettori takes the ride, as he chases a second Classic win on his final season in the saddle.

I am more keen on the other John & Thady Gosden runner in the Oaks, as Running Lion looked very progressive on her previous start. She landed the Pretty Polly by a commanding four lengths, reaching an RPR of 109. Further improvement is likely over this extended trip.

Epsom Oaks Prediction

It’s hard to put into words how impressive Savethelastdance’s performance was at Chester, as she stormed clear of the field with ease. She is the potential superstar in this field, and she looks to take the world of beating. Running Lion is the second choice, while Heartache Tonight could run a big race on her debut in Group 1 company after catching the eye in France this season.
