Preview
Los Angeles is beginning to return to their typical form, having gone 18-7 since a slow 13-13 start to the season. They owe much of that to their rejuvenated offense, which has scored 61 runs over their last 10 games. Unfortunately, the Dodgers pitching remains a major problem. In that same 10-game span, they allowed the opposition to score 59 runs, barely going positive. They need to fix their pitching problems.
The Rays managed to take 3 out of 4 games against the Blue Jays in their most recent series, putting their brutal 20-1 loss on Tuesday behind them. Tampa Bay remains as the best team in the MLB, now sitting at 37-15 on the year, on pace to win 115 games. On the other hand, they’ve cooled down a bit since their red-hot start. Over the past 16 games, they’ve gone just 8-8. Inconsistent pitching has been the main flaw.
Prediction
Both the Rays and Dodgers have been excellent this season, but could use some better pitching to remain at an elite level. They’ll definitely be heavy buyers at the trade deadline, but until then, both teams will have to make due with what they have. In this matchup, Los Angeles will field Noah Syndergaard (5.88 ERA), while Tampa Bay will have Jalen Beeks (4.68 ERA) on the mound. I’ll take the Rays to win it at home.
