  • The Mariners won 1-0 against the Yankees in extra innings.
  • Texas came up short on the road in Detroit, losing 3-2.
  • Seattle is 367-358 in their all-time history against the Rangers.

The Mariners (29-27) and the Rangers (35-20) match up in a key AL West clash. Seattle has begun to heat up and is fighting to return to their level of success from last year, while Texas continues their stellar start.

Preview

Seattle avoided a sweep against the Yankees, picking up a 1-0 win in the 10th inning. After allowing New York to score 20 runs in the first two games, they completely shut them down in game 3. George Kirby was sensational, pitching 8 shutout innings, while allowing just 3 hits and no walks. If the rest of the rotation improves, the Mariners will become even more dangerous. They are beginning to heat back up.

The Rangers were unable to sweep the Tigers, losing 3-2 on Wednesday. That being said, they still won 2 out of the 3 games against them, earning their 4th consecutive series win. They’ve gone 9-3 in that span, climbing into 2nd place in the MLB in record, and 1st in run differential. Their pitching has been very solid, but it’s their dangerous offense that has really pushed Texas to a new level. This series is very important.

Prediction

It’s a bit surprising to see the Rangers as the underdogs here, with a much better record and the home-field advantage in this game. It may be because the Mariners will have Luis Castillo (2.69 ERA) on the mound, but Texas will have an ace of their own in John Gray (2.81 ERA) starting here. This series should be very competitive, starting with this first game. I like the Rangers chances of getting the win at home here.
