Preview
Philadelphia had their 6-game winning streak snapped last week, going 2-3 in series against the Braves and Mets. They managed to climb back above .500 after a brutal start to the season, but still have a lot of work to do to have a chance of repeating as NL champions. They’ll face an equally hot Chicago team in this series. Nick Castellanos (.313 BA) and Kyle Schwarber (20 HR) have been crucial as veteran leaders.
The Cubs have now gone 11-3 over the last two weeks, surging to within just 3 games out of 1st place in a wide-open NL Central. They’re approaching the .500 mark as well, with a chance to enter the break with a winning record. Chicago’s pitching has been a huge part of their success as of late. Prior to their 7-5 loss to St. Louis, they had allowed just 17 runs in the previous 7 games. They’ll aim to get back on track here.
Prediction
Both of these teams are coming off of slower games after having a strong second half of June. They’ll be aiming to get back on track with the ultimate goal of entering the All-Star Break as buyers and not sellers. In this matchup, the Cubs will be at home, but will also need to overcome the troubles of Jameson Taillon (6.71 ERA). Conversely, Ranger Saurez (3.50 ERA) gives the Phillies a great chance of getting the road win.
