  • The Yankees lost in extra innings, 3-2, to the Red Sox.
  • On Sunday, the Mets came up short, losing 2-1 to Pittsburgh.
  • The Yankees are 82-61 in their all-time history against the Mets.

The Yankees (38-29) and the Mets (31-35) match up for a Subway Series rivalry. Both teams are doing worse than expected, sitting in the bottom half of their divisions. They still have plenty of time to heat up.

Preview

Despite many injuries, the Yankees have managed to stay afloat. That being said, they currently sit 10 games out of 1st place in their division, and have a lot more work to do. They’ve gone 4-6 over their last 10 games, scoring just 31 runs during that span. Before that stretch, the Yankees had scored 30 runs in just 3 games. They really need the return of their top sluggers to the lineup, and will fight to stay alive until then.

The Mets continue to have a tremendously disappointing year. After winning 101 games last season, many people expected them to compete for the division against this year. Unfortunately, they’ve now lost 8 of their last 9 games, dropping to 31-35 on the year. New York’s futility has come from every area. In the first half of their losing streak, they lost by scores of 3-0, and 2-1, but in the 2nd half they lost 14-7 and 13-10.

Prediction

Both the Yankees and Mets have underperformed this season, and are looking to heat back up against their cross-town rivals. For this first game, the Mets have an advantage with Max Scherzer (3.71 ERA) on the mound against Luis Severino (5.75 ERA) They also have home-field advantage, but will need to overcome the slump they are currently in. Even so, I like their chances of beating the Yankees in this game.
