Preview
The Buccaneers won their division last year, despite finishing below .500 at just 8-9. They’ll have a tougher time repeating that result this season with players such as Derek Carr, Adam Thielen, Bryce Young, and Bijan Robinson joining the division. At the same time, Tampa Bay will also no longer have Tom Brady at QB. Baker Mayfield looked pretty solid in the preseason, but the Bucs still have an uphill battle to the playoffs.
Minnesota had a stellar regular season last year, going 13-4. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the 9-7-1 Giants. That loss exposed the Vikings biggest flaw, their bottom-5 ranked defense. While their offense projects to remain near the top, Minnesota has major holes that still need addressing on defense. They spent their only draft selection in the top-100 on WR Jordan Addison.
Prediction
Both of these teams are expected to take a step backwards this season, and potentially miss the playoffs after making it in 2022. I’m not quite as cold on either team as most people, but I do think they’ll each win fewer games this season. I expect Tampa Bay to finish at 6-7 wins, with this game being one of their losses to a 9-10 win Vikings team. Minnesota might not cover the spread against Tampa’s tough defense.
