Game Preview
The Commanders defense simply couldn’t cope with Justin Fields and DJ Moore on Thursday night, and ultimately that is the cause of their 40-20 loss. QB Sam Howell was outstanding, throwing 37/51 completions for 388 yards and 2 touchdowns. The 23-year-old also added 4 carries for 19 yards and a 2-point conversion. Howell has a lot of talented receivers at his disposal, and has elevated the role of TE Logan Thomas and the veteran looks set to at least match his 2020 season when he finished in the top 5 at the position.
QB Desmond Ridder looked much improved this week in the Falcons’ 19-21 win over the Texans. The 24-year-old threw 28/37 completions for 329 yards and a touchdown as well as adding another score on the ground. Atlanta’s main weapons of Drake London, Kyle Pitts, Jonnu smith and Bijan Robinson all saw plenty of opportunities. If the lessons of this victory are learned, and Ridder is allowed to pass more then the Falcons may be a threat, at least in their division.
Prediction
The Commanders’ secondary struggled to contain Chicago last week, and if the Falcons decide to throw the ball more then this could be a tough matchup once again. I am leaning slightly toward Atlanta here but there won’t be a lot in it.
