A gripping 2026 season is in the books, with the Carolina Hurricanes winning their second Stanley Cup honor in franchise history. The Canes were excellent in the Finals, requiring just four games to get the better of the Vegas Golden Knights.

When Does The 2026-27 NHL Season Start?

The 110th season of NHL action is scheduled to get underway in September, with the return of an 84-game regular season schedule for the first time since 1993-94. Playoff action will then get underway in April, before the Stanley Cup Finals start in early June.

Canes Aiming to Go Back-to-Back

It was a season to remember for Rob Brind’Amour and his Carolina Hurricanes team, as the franchise celebrated their second Stanley Cup success at the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.

The Canes were the dominant team throughout the post-season, winning eight consecutive games after sweeping series against the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers.

Eastern Conference success was secured following a five-game win over the Montreal Canadiens, before the Vegas Golden Knights had no answer for the Canes strength in the Stanley Cup Finals. Overall, they won the honor in just 19 games, which meant that they ended the postseason with the fewest losses since the Edmonton Oilers in 1987-88.

However, retaining the Stanley Cup is a different proposition. The Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning have both achieved the feat in modern history, though, indicating that it isn’t impossible.

Early Stanley Cup Pick

For much of the season, it appeared as though the Colorado Avalanche would coast to at least the Stanley Cup Finals.

However, they fell apart in the postseason, ultimately losing in four games against the Golden Knights in the Western Conference Finals. I would expect them to get back on track at the start of next season, and once again accumulate the best record in the Central Division.

The experience from the Finals defeat will be used as motivation, and at the current odds, they are the value play when assessing the early Stanley Cup odds.
