Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens Preview

For the first time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there will be questions to answer for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes were ruthless swatted aside in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals by the Montreal Canadiens, and they realistically must level the series before it moves to Canada for Game 3.

Carolina Hurricanes Stats & Team News

Everything appeared to be going to plan for the Carolina Hurricanes following sweeping wins against the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers. However, a first setback in the postseason was inflicted in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, as nothing went to plan on Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canes struggled defensively throughout the game, conceding six goals, including four in the opening period. Their only moments of offensive quality were delivered by Eric Robinson and Seth Jarvis. Frederik Andersen only made 16 saves from 21 shots. A better performance is required in Game 2.

Montreal Canadiens Stats & Team News

The Montreal Canadiens were forced to work incredibly hard to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, being forced to Game 7s in each of the last two rounds. However, if anything, they looked the fresher of the two teams in the opening game against the Canes.

The Habs scored four times in a dominant opening period on Thursday, before securing the win with two further efforts in the final frame. Cole Caufield, Phillip Danault, Alexandre Texier, and Ivan Demidov all scored goals in the win. Jakub Dobes was excellent in the Montreal goal, making 25 saves from 27 shots.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens Picks

It was an uncharacteristically poor showing from the Hurricanes in Game 1 against the Canadiens, and they should be capable of bouncing back to form in Game 2. Therefore, a home win is preferred to level the series ahead of Game 3 in Montreal.
