Alexander Zverev vs. Karen Khachanov Preview

A spot in this year’s US Open final will be up for grabs in New York on Friday, as Alexander Zverev takes on Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It has been an excellent calendar year for Zverev, as the German has risen to second in the world rankings after reaching the final in each of the last two Grand Slam events. Zverev has grown in confidence as the US Open has progressed, winning each of his three matches in straight sets. Zverev cruised through his quarterfinal showdown against Botic van de Zandschulp earlier this week, dropping just eight games and hitting 94 winners.

Karen Khachanov has been a surprise package at the US Open this year, with the 50th-ranked player in the world rolling back the years. The Russian will be competing in his second US Open semi-final, and plenty of confidence will be taken from his wins over seeded players such as Felix Auger-Aliassime and Learner Tien earlier in the Slam.

Khachanov eased through to the final four with a walkover win against Alexander Blockx on Wednesday. The Russian was leading 6-2, 7-5 at the time of his rival’s retirement; with his dominant first serve seeing him win 89% of the points. His efficiency will make him a dangerous proposition for Zverev on Friday, as Khachanov hit four break point winners from six opportunities.

Head-to-Head Record

Zverev holds a comfortable overall head-to-head advantage against Khachanov, winning six of the nine clashes. That includes a straight sets win at the ATP Cincinnati Masters last year.

Alexander Zverev vs. Karen Khachanov Picks

Zverev has been at the peak of his powers at the US Open, and his ability to dictate rallies and return big serves will make him challenging to oppose against Khachanov. However, we could foresee the Russian getting some joy from his powerful serve, meaning Zverev may book his spot in the US Open in four sets.
