What Does ‘Total’ Mean in Betting? (Total Points)
Total or ‘totals’ betting, is a wager on the total number of points, goals, or runs in a game/event, also referred to as “over/under” betting. The sportsbook will set a total number of goals or points where it’s expected that the chances of there being over or under that amount in the game is fairly similar.
Example of Total Betting
A sportsbook could set the total line of a football game at 48.5 points. If there are 49 points or more then the ‘over’ selection will win, if there are 48 points or less then the ‘under’ selection will be successful. There will often be half a point or goal included in the line as a ‘hook’ to ensure that there is a winner.
