The Czech First League, otherwise known as Fortuna Liga because of its sponsors, is relatively a young competition. But don’t think that football in this country has a short history.

We are positive that you’ve heard about Slavia and Sparta, and their famous Prague Derby. It is one of the longest continental derbies in Europe, and just a few have a richer history. Czech football teams played in three national championships, starting with the Austro-Hungarian until the end of the World War I, and afterward in the Czechoslovakian First League.

Eventually, they finally got their own competition in 1993, after they split ways with Slovakia.

From that moment on, Sparta Prague won 12 titles, Viktoria Plzen five, same as Slavia Prague, while Sloven Liberec has 3. Banik Ostrava has one title.

Format of the Competition

There are 16 clubs in the league, and the Czech’s have an interesting format for its competition. After the end of the regular part of the season, the teams are divided into three groups, using the position in the standings.

Top six are entering the Championship group, and they continue to play five more rounds against one another, but only once, not twice as it would be logical.  Points won there are added to the ones from the regular part and the winner is whoever finishes first.

The teams from 7th to 10th position are playing the Europa League playoffs, with the best one facing the fourth or the fifth (depending on a Cup winner) from the Championship group and determining who is going to the EL qualifications.

The last six teams are playing in the Relegation group using the same system as the Championship group. The last team in the standings directly heads for the second division, while two in front of him enter the playoffs with the second and third from the lower tier.

Fortuna Liga will have two places in the Champions League qualifiers and three in the Europa League qualifiers.

Betting on Czech First League

Usual betting markets such as:

  1. Winner of the match
  2. Total goals over/under
  3. Asian handicap

We are not going to explain a lot here because you definitely know what each one stands for. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of in-play betting.

As for the outright bets, the most popular consider the winner of the title. The next one is the top goalscorer, and after that comes to suffer relegation — nothing special as you see here.

Tips and Tricks When Betting on the Czech First League

You need to know that over the last few years, Slavia Prague became a very powerful team, as they received massive investments from China. However, due to political reasons that stopped this fall. So watch out what happens next, because this club can easily go down.

See the venues of the games, as several teams in the league have artificial turfs, meaning that their matches have much higher efficiency.

In some parts of the Czech Republic, the weather during the winter can be very bad, therefore, track the weather conditions, as they can determine a lot of things on the court.
