The English League Cup, or EFL Cup, is typically described as the second most prestigious cup competition in England. All of the top four divisions are involved in the cup competition, with the winners handed a spot in the following season’s Europa League. The competition is currently called the Carabao Cup due to sponsorship reasons, while it has had various other names throughout its history.

English League Cup Format
The competition takes place over midweek fixtures throughout the first half of the season. There are seven rounds for teams to progress through, with all of these except the semi-finals being single-leg ties. The semi-final stages are two-legged affairs, with each of the teams involved playing at home and away.
Due to the competition starting earlier in the season, the final also takes place earlier. It is the first domestic trophy up for grabs for teams, as the final takes place at Wembley in February. Teams that are involved in the highest divisions or European competition enter the EFL Cup at different stages.
English League Cup Winners
There have been 23 winners of the competition in its 60-year history. Liverpool have won the EFL Cup more than any other side, as they have recorded eight successes. English League Cup Giant Killings
The English League Cup is renowned for producing some shock results, and that is something that punters should be aware of before betting. Many of the big shocks in recent memory have come against Manchester United. The Red Devils lost against Southend United in the 2006-07 season, despite Wayne Rooney starting the match. They followed this up in the following season by being beaten by League One Coventry City at Old Trafford. Most recently, they fell to a 4-0 defeat against MK Dons in 2014, despite fielding five international players.
Liverpool have also crashed out of the League Cup in embarrassing circumstances. They were beaten by Grimsby Town at Anfield in 2001, before being beaten by Northampton Town in 2010. Bradford City had an incredible run to the final in the 2012-13 season. They knocked out Arsenal and Wigan, before beating Aston Villa in the two-legged semi-final.
Betting On The English League Cup
There are ante-post and individual match bet markets available for punters. Both can offer incredible value throughout the season, with the ante-post market constantly changing judging by the draws and teams still in contention.
To Win English League Cup
The only ante-post betting option available to punters for the English League Cup is the ability to place a stake on the team that the punter believes will win the competition. These odds change throughout the season, so finding the optimal time to place the bet is the crucial factor. Should the team that you have betted on win the competition, then you will be rewarded with the returns.
Individual Match Betting
There are various betting opportunities for punters to win returns during each match. Here are the most common ways in which you can place a bet on the English League Cup matches:
- Match Result: The most common way to place a bet is by putting money on the team that will win the respective tie. It is important to remember that should a match go to extra time; then bets will be settled as a draw.
- Both Teams To Score: Punters can simply place their stake on yes or no depending on whether they believe both sides will score in the match. If you place your wager on yes, then it doesn’t matter who wins as long as both teams score.
- Over/Under: You can also bet on whether there will be less or more goals, corner or cards than a benchmark set by the sportsbook. For instance, they could set a benchmark of 2.5 goals. If the punter thinks there will be at least three goals, then they will place their stake on over.
- Handicap: Due to the difference in quality between teams in the cup, there could be an avenue to take advantage of the handicap market. Here, the sportsbook will set the favoured side with a disadvantage that they will need to overcome. For instance, Manchester City could start a match against Southend United with a handicap of -3.5. For the bet to be a winner, City need to win by at least four goals.
- Method of Victory: There are numerous ways in which teams can win in the League Cup, and punters can stake their money on whether that will be in normal time, extra time or by winning a penalty shootout. Punters can also combine this method with a winning team for additional value.
