PGA Tour-LIV Golf Merger Special Odds, and Predictions

By · June 7, 2023
  • Controversial decision to merge the PGA Tour and LIV Golf was made on Tuesday
  • Merger comes 12 months after disruption in the sport

The biggest sports story of the week saw the PGA Tour and LIV Golf put their unrest to one side, as a merger was revealed on Tuesday morning. It was a stunning turn of events, which also brings to an end an unrivaled year of lawsuits brought to players on the Saudi-backed tour against the PGA Tour.

A number of intriguing betting markets have opened following the merger, and the latest PGA Tour- LIV Golf merger specials can be found below.

Golf Entity Name

Golf Entity NameOdds
GGA (Global Golf Association)+400
WGT (World Golf Tour)+500
WGA (World Golf Association)+600
WGO (World Golf Organization)+600
GWT (Golf World Tour)+600
PGL (Professional Golf League)+800
WGF (World Golf Federation)+900
GGL (Global Golf League)+900

The merger between the two tours means that a new entity will be established over the next six months, with events played under a fresh name on the tour. It seems hard to believe that the PGA Tour could be renamed after being one of the most synonymous titles in the sport throughout history.

But, it’s unlikely that LIV will be happy to play under the historic name, given that the Saudi backer will likely be putting in more money into the events that are being staged. The current favorite in the betting is Global Golf Association, but we struggle to see this new name catching on. However, we could see the World Golf Tour being a popular title, taking words from each of the three merging parties into one new entity.

While the merger was announced in early June, it remains incredibly unlikely that a merging tournament between the parties will take place before the end of the calendar year. There are clearly going to be issues that the merger will need to overcome, with player scrutiny likely to be a key factor. That isn’t a surprising issue, given that two of the biggest stars on the PGA Tour- Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm both refused mega-money offers from LIV to stay loyal to the PGA Tour.

There is certainly likely to be massive animosity from the players that rejected huge sums, as they could have easily accepted the Saudi money only to return to the PGA Tour action a year later. Therefore, we could see a first merged tournament taking place much later than January 2024.

The announcement that the merger has been agreed upon doesn’t mean that all the finer details of the deal have been agreed. Therefore, the entity agreement isn’t likely to be signed immediately.

The backlash that follows the announcement this week will be key, but it could have major repercussions on the stars that will be competing in the Ryder Cup later this year. We would be amazed if the finer details are agreed to before the start of September, meaning that later than that date appears to be the best selection in this market.
