Belmont Oaks: Betting Preview
A high-quality renewal of the G1 Belmont Oaks is set for July 4, with a field of ten competing for their share of the purse and an automatic spot at the Breeders’ Cup later this season.
William Buick and Charlie Appleby teamed up for success in this race two years ago, and they will hold an outstanding chance on Saturday with Abashiri. The three-year-old is highly regarded by connections after being chucked into the G1 1,000 Guineas (finishing fifth) after breaking her maiden at Kempton. A similar profile to many of the yard’s international stars, and is expected to take this step up in distance in her stride.
Kensington Lane is another European raider, but the three-year-old filly looks better suited to a shorter distance after failing to see out the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas trip on her last start.
Fitz Right and Just Aloof represent the respected Chad Brown yard. The former looks like his standout chance after racking up an impressive three-timer, which included a win in G2 Wonder Again Stakes at Saratoga last month.
Faithful Departed could be the pick based on form. The three-year-old took the step up to this weekend’s distance in her stride, easily beating Storm’s Wake at Churchill Downs in the G3 Regret. That form has since been well-represented, with the third coming out and winning.
Carmensita is a fascinating wildcard in this weekend’s race for trainer Horacio DePaz. The filly returned following a long layoff last month with an excellent second at Saratoga. Should come on for that run, and clearly has some ability.
Belmont Oaks Picks
This step up in distance holds the key for Abashiri this weekend. The Frankel filly hasn’t been beaten far in the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas, finishing just three lengths behind subsequent Group One winner Precise at the Curragh last time. If at her best, she will be very difficult to beat on Saturday.
