Belmont Stakes: Runner-By-Runner Guide
Renegade (Todd Pletcher)
Todd Pletcher will be aiming to win the Belmont Stakes for a fifth time. Renegade ran an excellent race in the Kentucky Derby, defying a low draw to finish a neck second. Had no luck in-running at Churchill Downs, but still finished ahead of many re-opposing rivals. Had previously started the year with back-to-back wins in the Sam F. Davis Stakes and G1 Arkansas Derby. Previous course experience, but was well beaten on debut over six furlongs at Saratoga.
Chief Wallabee (William Mott)
Chief Wallabee represents last year’s winning trainer, William Mott. The three-year-old was an unlucky fourth in the Kentucky Derby, making up plenty of late ground after being forced to make his challenge wide. Was second in the G2 Fountain of Youth and third in the G1 Florida Derby; both beaten under a length by Commandment. Should be better suited to this stamina test than most as a son of Constitution.
Commandment (Brad Cox)
Brad Cox’s main challenge this week comes in the form of Commandment. The Into Mischief colt was disappointing in the Derby when finishing seventh. However, if forgiving that effort, he shares form lines with all notable horses from the division, winning the G2 Fountain of Youth and G1 Florida Derby. Is yet to show the same level of form outside of Florida, but interesting nevertheless.
Emerging Market (Chad Brown)
Lightly-raced son of Candy Ride for the respected Chad Brown yard. Was eighth in the Derby when seemingly not enjoying the hustle and bustle of a big-field race. Will be better suited to this weekend with a smaller field involved. Has previously shown plenty of ability, winning the G2 Louisiana Derby and besting Powershift at Tampa Bay Downs on debut. No surprise if he is able to get back on track.
Golden Tempo (Cherie DeVaux)
Historic winner of the Kentucky Derby for Cherie DeVaux. Opted against dropping down in distance to contest the Preakness Stakes, meaning that the Curlin colt comes here fresh. The longer distance will suit his chances, and he has performed well on all career starts to date. Unlikely to get a red-hot pace to aim at this weekend, but shouldn’t be dismissed in his bid to follow-up on his Kentucky Derby heroics.
Powershift (Todd Pletcher)
A second runner for Todd Pletcher this Saturday comes in the form of Powershift. Is more unexposed than most in the race, but the Constitution colt has won once from three career starts. Made a striking impression when bouncing back to winning form at Churchill Downs last time, scoring an Equibase rating of 91. Yet to show that level of form in graded company.
Growth Equity (Chad Brown)
A second runner for Chad Brown in this weekend’s Belmont Stakes. Was a dominant winner of the G3 Peter Pan Stakes last time; a path previously taken to success in this week’s race by Arcangelo. Has progressed with every career start to date, and has previously finished second at Saratoga. Ticks plenty of boxes, and shouldn’t be dismissed with further improvement on the card.
Ottinho (Chad Brown)
Ottinho is yet to show a level of form capable of winning the Belmont Stakes. Has won once from his last three career starts, and was last seen finishing eleven lengths behind Further Ado in the G1 Blue Grass Stakes. Will likely be used for tactical reasons at Saratoga this weekend.
Vitruvian Man (Doug O’Neill)
Doug O’Neill’s Belmont Stakes contender is yet to fire at the top level. Was last seen finishing third in the G1 Santa Anita Derby, finishing nine lengths behind So Happy. Yet to show any kind of evidence that he can be competitive at this level, and the Vino Rosso colt is easy to overlook.
Belmont Stakes Picks
It is hard to separate many of the leading contenders this weekend. However, Renegade looks like the standout play that will be suited by this step up in distance. A clear trip will make him hard to beat, while we could foresee Growth Equity, Commandment, and Golden Tempo competing for the placings.
