Race Preview

A huge afternoon of horse racing action at Del Mar kicks off with the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on Saturday. This race has been contested since 2007, and it covers a total of seven furlongs on the dirt. Goodnight Olive has been the dominant force in the race in the last two years, winning both the 2022 and 2023 editions for trainer Chad Brown.

Brown doesn’t saddle the dual champion this weekend, but he does have the hot favorite in the form of Ways And Means.

The three-year-old has gone from strength to strength this season, most recently when dominating the field in the G2 Gallant Bloom Stakes to beat Nic’s Style by four lengths. Ratings indicate that she is the one to beat.

Vahva was well beaten on her previous effort by Society when only claiming third in the G1 Ballerina Handicap. However, her performances prior to that effort were excellent, winning on two straight appearances over seven furlongs at Churchill Downs.

William Mott is represented by Scylla, with the Juddmonte runner taking second in the recent G1 Ballerina Handicap. She has won twice from five starts this season, but it could be argued that her best runs have come over further than the Filly & Mare Sprint trip.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Picks

Ways And Means is a deserving favorite this weekend. However, I have a soft spot for Society, and she could finally get her Breeders’ Cup moment at the third opportunity.

She was fourth in this race last year, but has been strong this term. Most recently, she put the G1 Ballerina field in their place when thrashing Scylla by three lengths. A big run is likely.
