Eclipse Stakes: Betting Preview

One of the most prestigious summer flat races in Britain is set for this Saturday, as a field of seven runners will go to post for the G1 Eclipse Stakes. A high-quality roll of honor indicates the prestige of this race, while three-year-old’s have excelled in recent years, winning each of the last five editions.

Aidan O’Brien has also trained the winner in each of the last three years, and four of the last five, meaning Constitution River looks hard to oppose. The three-year-old took his form to the next level when winning the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at the end of May, ensuring that he has now won three from three in stakes company. Is still improving.

Hawk Mountain is O’Brien’s second string this weekend, with the runner finishing second behind Constitution River in France last time. Unlikely to reverse that form on these terms.

Gethin is one of the interesting contenders for the Owen Burrows yard, and the strength of his recent second behind the talented Ombudsman in the G3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes reads very well. Looks a high-quality four-year-old, and will have King’s Gambit in here as his pacemaker.

Saddadd is the only previous course and distance winner in this field, but the Roger Varian runner will need to bounce back after finishing third in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last time.

A Boy Named Susie could be an interesting angle for exotics, having run extremely well on both starts this season, taking a close third behind Christmas Day in the G3 Ballysax, before finishing within three lengths of Constitution River in the French Derby.

Eclipse Stakes Picks

It is incredibly hard to oppose Constitution River in the Eclipse Stakes this weekend. The three-year-old ticks all of the desired trend boxes, and holds a form advantage over his key market rivals. He could lead home another O’Brien one-two, with A Boy Named Susie taking third to showcase the dominance of the three-year-olds in this race.
