Haskell Stakes: Betting Preview

Monmouth Park’s big race of the season takes place this Saturday, as the G1 Haskell Stakes offers an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The race is one of the most historic on the calendar, with eleven previous winners later landing championship honors at the Eclipse Awards.

Brad Cox has an excellent recent record in the race, ensuring Further Ado should be a solid contender. The three-year-old will have Irad Ortiz aboard, and he bounced back to his very best with an impressive win in the G3 Matt Winn last time. That run was more like it after his disappointing eighth when favorite in the G1 Kentucky Derby. Plenty to like about this year’s G1 Blue Grass winner.

The Puma makes his return to action this weekend after being forced off the Triple Crown trail due to a setback. He got the better of Further Ado when winning the G3 Tampa Bay Derby in March, and finished second in behind Commandment in the G1 Florida Derby.

Iron Honor is a highly-regarded son of Nyquist from the Chad Brown stable, with Flavien Prat booked to take the ride. His second in the G1 Preakness was a career-best effort, and he also placed in the G1 Champagne Stakes as a juvenile. Has form to reverse, but plenty to like.

The Preakness Stakes form is further represented by the winner of the race being involved. Napoleon Solo produced a career-best effort to land the Triple Crown race by a length from Iron Honor. Had previously been well beaten when fifth in both the G2 Fountain of Youth and G2 Wood Memorial.

Ocelli rounds off the leading contenders. The three-year-old was an excellent third in the Kentucky Derby, before taking a step back when fourth in the Preakness Stakes. Was last seen finishing second behind Chip Honcho in the G3 Ohio Derby.

Haskell Stakes Picks

It could pay to keep it simple this weekend. Further Ado looks to be back on track following his victory in the Matt Winn, and this looks like a perfect opportunity to follow up. I’d expect Iron Honor to reverse the form with Napoleon Solo, while The Puma could take third due to lack of fitness.
