Whitney Stakes: Betting Preview

It is easy to make a case that this weekend’s G1 Whitney Stakes is the race of the season. Major clues ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic will be on offer, with three of the top four in the ante-post betting set to target their share of the $1 million purse at Saratoga.

Magnitude is the obvious starting point for the Steven Asmussen stable. The four-year-old has looked better than ever this season, with his form reaching new heights with a one-length win over Forever Young in the G1 Dubai Gold Cup. Repeated that level of form on his U.S. return in June, beating Baeza by nearly two lengths in the G1 Stephen Foster.

That Grade One at Churchill Downs could hold the key this weekend, with Sovereignty and White Abarrio finishing five and nine lengths, respectively, behind the eventual winner. Still, there is hope that the former may be able to recapture his three-year-old form for Will Mott after scoring in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. But, at this stage, it could be argued that he hasn’t trained on.

Tiztastic and Forged Steel are easy to overlook, as they have plenty to find on official ratings. Antiquarian could be of interest for exotics, as he steps back up in class after finishing a distance fourth in the G2 Suburban Stakes.

Nitrogen is the wild card in this weekend’s field, with the four-year-old filly for Mark Casse taking on the boys. She was sensational last time out when beating Bless The Broken by 13 lengths in the G1 Ogden Phipps. She typically thrives at Saratoga, having landed the G1 Alabama over course and distance last year. She could become the seventh filly to win the Whitney, and the first since Personal Ensign in 1988.

Whitney Stakes Picks

This is the best race of the season, and a sensational renewal is expected. Sovereignty has major questions to answer. Nitrogen is a must for exotics. However, the main win play is for Magnitude, who has drawn the rail. The Asmussen runner has been excellent on all three starts this season, and his emergence as the main contender in the Classic betting will come this weekend.
