Spinaway Stakes: Betting Preview
An important stop on the road to the Breeders’ Cup is set for Saratoga this weekend, as the G1 Spinaway Stakes headlines the card in New York. This has been a pivotal race in determining the two-year-old pecking order for the fillies, with Echo Zulu and Vequist both following up wins at the Spa by landing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies later in the season.
Life Changing will be a leading contender for the Todd Pletcher yard on Saturday. The filly by Life Is Good made a striking impression on debut, beating Judy’s Rockette in a maiden special weight over six furlongs at Saratoga and clocking a speed figure of 101.
Steven Asmussen won the Spinaway with Echo Zulu in 2021, and he saddles Summer Starlet this weekend. The two-year-old by City Of Light was a winner on debut over 6 1/2 furlongs, clocking a 110 figure when beating Aerial Affair. Brad Cox is represented by Angel of Kirk, who was also a winner on debut at Saratoga, but improvement will be required after gaining an 87 speed figure when winning over 5 1/2 furlongs.
Harper’s Corner is more experienced than most in the field this weekend, and there was plenty to like about her recent effort when maintaining her perfect record on the track, clocking a 112 rating when winning the Listed Schuylerville at Saratoga. Girvy Girl and Stress Relief also bring unbeaten records into the Spinaway this weekend, with the latter last seen landing the G3 Adirondack at the Spa last month.
Spinaway Stakes Picks
We could see a potential star on the track this weekend, as Life Is Good filly Life Changing should be hard to beat. Todd Pletcher boasts an excellent record in the Spinaway, and I’d expect his runner to sit off the pace before using her devastating turn of foot to ease clear of the field in the final couple of furlongs. Flavien Prat jumps aboard, showing jockey confidence in her chances. Harper’s Corner could be the progressive filly to follow Life Changing home.
