Milwaukee took 2 out of 3 games against the Reds in their final series before the break, pulling to within one game of 1st place in the NL Central. They face Cincinnati once again to start the 2nd half, but will be on the road this time around. Another series win would guarantee the Brewers at least a share of the lead, but a series loss would further the gap. Milwaukee is still considered by many to be the division favorite.
The Reds may have lost their last series against the Brewers, but they had a tremendous past couple of months. Since June 5, Cincinnati has gone 24-8, proving themselves as legitimate contenders to win the NL Central this season. The Reds are one of several MLB teams overperforming expectations thanks to a youth movement. 25-year-old 1B Spencer Steer is having a standout season in his 2nd year in the MLB.
Prediction
This should be a very interesting rivalry series between the two NL Central teams most likely to win the division this year. I expect the Reds to win 2 out of the 3 games in this series, but I don’t love their chances of winning the first game. They’ll have a struggling Graham Ashcraft (6.28 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) on the mound against Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes (3.94 ERA, 1.14 WHIP). The Brewers should win this one on pitching.
